On 5, 6 and 7 December, more than 1,500 chemists from the worlds of science and industry gathered together for the 5th edition of the CHAINS chemistry conference.

In addition to thematic parallel sessions and poster presentations by young researchers, the programme included plenary lectures by top national and international speakers and an after dinner lecture by Nobel Prize winner Ben Feringa. There were also focus sessions on innovative, topical research on specific themes. Various prizes were awarded, such as the NWO Athena Prize, the 2017 Gouden KIEM, and the gold medals from the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV) and the Hoogewerff fund. Team CRISPR Clear won Top Sector Chemistry’s 2017 Student Competition. On 6 December, #chains2017 was a trending topic in the Netherlands. This successful anniversary has been hailed as the “Woodstock of Chemistry”.
