Prof. ir. Ilja Voets is the winner of the KNCV Gold Medal 2019. She heads the Laboratory of Self-organizing Soft Matter at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems at Eindhoven University of Technology focused on self-assembly man-made, biological, and biohybrid soft matter to gain fundamental insights for translation into rational design strategies to engineer novel functional soft materials. The KNCV Gouden Medaille is the most important award in the Netherlands for researchers who have done groundbreaking work in the chemistry profession in the broadest sense of the word. The award ceremony will take place at CHAINS on 10 December from 20:00 hrs.

Self-organization provides a fast, efficient, and low-cost pathway to functional and responsive hierarchically structured materials that are difficult if not impossible to prepare by other means. I will focus on recent insights and developments in the field of supramolecular assembly at the interface of life and materials sciences, which open up interesting opportunities for the design and characterization of self-organized soft matter and its application in biomedicine, coating technology, complex food matrices, and photonics.
